In theory, basic education is free for all children in Ecuador. In practice, schools often charge fees to cover the costs of books, teaching materials and utilities. This prevents many poor families from sending their children to school. Learn more.

ETHIOPIA

Types of Meals Provided: Cracked wheat with chickpeas, which is a local dish called kinche.

Many children and their families face a daily struggle for survival, particularly in rural areas where most Ethiopians live. Recurring periods of severe drought and unpredictable rainfall make it almost impossible for people to grow enough food, causing widespread poverty and hunger. Learn more.

KENYA

Types of Meals Provided: Rice and beans.

We work in Eldoret where we attract many children living in urban slums into the classroom. In northern Turkana, which has been hard hit by drought and rising food insecurity, we provide life-saving meals to the children of livestock farmers via nurseries. Learn more.

Types of Meals Provided: Lentil dhal with rice / vegetable curries with rice.

In India, we work in both formal and non-formal education centres – such as railway platforms – providing a daily meal to children who are disadvantaged by caste, disability, gender, or HIV status. Learn more.

Our meals act as an incentive for families to send their children to school, rather than sending them to work in casual labour jobs that can be dangerous and prevent them from gaining an education. Learn more.
